Sailing is quite safe in the " inner islands ", i.e in the islands located within a radius of 60 miles around Mahé. Among them, let's name Silhouette in the north-west, Frégate in the east and Praslin and La Digue in the north-east. The islands, a bit farther in the north like Bird Island and Denis Island remain accessible safely. On the contrary, we advise you not to sail farther and of course to avoid sailing off the coasts of Somalia.
In the course of a year, there are two opposite systems of wind with a halt in between. From December to April, the trade winds blow from north-west ( 10 to 15 knots ) and from June to October, they veer towards the south-east ( called suette in the local language, 15 to 25 knots ). Between these periods winds are weaker and not easy to forecast. You might have to cope with stronger winds ( over 30 knots ) in August but its probability remains quite low.
